Identification

  • Medium-sized songbird
  • Male all black with red shoulder patch
  • Female brown with thick stripes all over
  • 8.75" (22 cm.)

Habitat

  • Wetlands, open areas
  • Roadsides, weedy fields

Additional Information

  • Abundant migrant and summer resident
  • Defends nest, often attacking large animals, including humans
  • Each pair raises two or three broods a  season, building a separate nest for each
  • After nesting season, congregates in large
          flocks in wetlands
  • Abundant KVR breeding bird
