Identification

  • Medium-sized bird of prey
  • Mottled dark above, with reddish
         shoulders (although not always visible)
  • Reddish below
  • Dark tail bands
  • Juvenile brown above, light below with
         brown
    streaking
  • 15-19" (38-48 cm.)

Habitat

  • Large tracts of mature forest near water
  • Floodplain forests

Additional Information

  • Uncommon migrant and summer resident
  • Wisconsin threatened species
  • More aquatic diet than most raptors
  • Occasionally found on the KVR
