Identification

  • Medium-sized, stocky, grey songbird
  • Black on wings and tail
  • Thick black eye stripe
  • White patch on wings and white on
         sides of tail
  • Lightly barred below
  • Juvenile brownish with darker barring
  • 10" (25 cm.)

Habitat

  • Open or brushy areas

Additional Information

  • Uncommon migrant and winter resident
  • Predatory songbird
  • Eats small birds and mammals
  • Sometimes caches food by impaling it on
         thorns or barbed wire
