Identification

  • Small songbird
  • Olive green upper parts
  • Bright yellow underside
  • Black forecrown and sides of throat
  • Yellow spectacles
  • Short tail
  • No wingbars or other markings
  • Facial markings on female duller than male
  • 5.5" (14 cm.)

Habitat

  • Forests with heavy undergrowth

  • Uncommon migrant and summer resident
  • Wisconsin threatened species
  • More common in southern US
  • Named for the state where first discovered
  • Nests on or near the ground
  • KVR Breeding bird --found in a few
         places in the large forest blocks
