Identification

  • Small songbird, large sparrow
  • Brown above with dark streaks
  • White below with streaked sides
  • Two white wingbars
  • Black face, crown, and throat
  • Pink bill
  • Immature has less black on crown and throat
  • 7.5" (19 cm.)

Habitat

  • Hedgerows and brushy edges

Additional Information

  • Rare migrant and winter visitor
  • Nests in the far north, in the transition
         zone between the boreal forest and
         the tundra more commonly found in
         winter farther west -- KS, OK, and TX
