Identification

  • Large bulky brown owl with "ear" tufts
  • Horizontal marks on chest and belly
  • White throat (not always visible)
  • 22" (56 cm.)

Habitat

  • Woodland
  • Woods near agricultural land

Additional Information

  • Common resident
  • Uses large stick nests of other birds--
         crow or Red-tailed Hawk nests
  • Breeding season early --courtship begins
        
    in December, can be on nest in January,
         but more often early February and later
