  • Blue-black back and top of head
  • Red-brown throat, orangish belly
  • Deeply forked tail
  • Young has paler belly, shorter forked tail
  • 6.75" (17 cm.)

Habitat

  • Open areas, farmyards

  • Common migrant and summer resident
  • Builds open-topped mud nests
  • Nests on ledges of buildings, "
         under bridges
  • Eats flying insects, often swooping
         near the ground over open areas,
         including fields and parks
