Identification

  • Medium-sized songbird
  • Male has black head, back, tail and wings
  • Brick red breast
  • Female is olive above, yellow-green below, dark grey to black wings with two 
    white wingbars
  • Immature male similar to female, with
         black bib
  • 6-7" (15-18 cm)

Habitat

  • Deciduous forest, farmsteads
  • Open areas with some trees

Additional Information

  • Uncommon migrant and summer resident
  • Spends relatively little time on breeding
         grounds
  • Raises one brood
  • Occasionally found on the Reserve
