Identification

  • Medium-sized stocky songbird
  • Plain olive-green to grey back and wings
  • Throat and breast bright yellow
  • White underside
  • White line above eye, white crescent
         below eye
  • Stout black bill
  • Rather long tail
  • 7" (18 cm.)

Habitat

  • Thickets, dense brush, shrubby upland
  • Hardwood forests

Additional Information

  • Rare migrant and summer resident
  • Wisconsin species of special concern
  • Largest wood warbler
  • Song a loud, unmusical collection of
        whistles, squawks, chuckles and grunts
  • Somewhat secretive in thick vegetation
