Identification

  • Small, bright yellow songbird
  • Back and wings slightly darker
  • Male has chestnut-red streaks on breast
  • Female duller yellow, no reddish streaks
  • 4.5-5" (11-13 cm.) 

Habitat

  • Wet, shrubby areas
  • Brushy pastures
  • Forest edge

Additional Information

  • Common migrant, common summer resident
  • Often a host for Brown-headed Cowbird
  • Sometimes builds new nest atop
         old nest when cowbird eggs
         are discovered
  • Common KVR breeding bird
