Identification

  • Medium-sized songbird
  • Male black and white with rose-red
         triangular patch on breast, red
         underwings, white patches on wing
  • Female brown above, white below with
         brown streaks, white wingbars,
         white line over eye, yellow under wing
  • 8" (20 cm.)

Habitat

  • Deciduous and mixed forest
  • Residential areas

Additional Information

  • Common migrant and summer resident
  • Song similar to that of American Robin
  • Sweet melodius song often interrupted with metallic "chink" call note
  • Flimsy nest -- so thin that eggs can be seen through the nest sides
  • Male and female share incubation duties
