Identification

  • Small songbird
  • Grey body, pale rusty below
  • Head black and white
  • Top of head black on male, grey on female
  • White stripe above eye and white
         throat black eyeline
  • 4.5" (11 cm.)

Habitat

  • Coniferous forests, residential areas

Additional Information

  • Fairly common migrant and summer
         resident in northern WI
  • Fairly common winter resident
  • Occasionally found on the Reserve
         in summer
  • Winter sightings in southern WI
  • More numerous when there is a shortage
         of cones in the northern forests
  • Call is a nasal "hank-hank"
