Identification

  • Male dull red color, brightest on head,
         more brown on wings and back
  • Female: streaked brown,lack red, broad
         stripe on lower cheek; light stripe
         behind eye
  • Relatively short and notched tail
  • Relatively large head
  • 5.5-6" (14-15 cm.)

Habitat

  • Woods, shrubby areas

Additional Information

  • Common to abundant WI Winter resident
  • Often found at feeders
  • Common in summer in northern WI
  • Competes with House finches
