Identification

  • Large raptor
  • Adults dark above with fine grey barring     below, dark head with broad light stripe above the eye
  • Juveniles brown above, lighter below with brown streaks
  • 21-25" (53-64 cm.)

Habitat

  • Northern forests
  • Variety of habitats for hunting in winter

Additional Information

  • Uncommon migrant, rare winter resident     southern Wisconsin
  • Some winters more found in southern areas    ("irruptions")
  • Hunts birds and some mammals, including rabbits and squirrels
  • Will chase prey on foot when necessary
