Identification

  • Medium-sized songbird with crest
  • Male bright red with red-orange bill, black
         a
    round beak
  • Female greyish tan with orange bill, feathers tinged with red in varying amounts
  • Juvenile like female with dark bill
  • 8-9" (21-23 cm.)

Habitat

  • Shrubby areas, woodland and field edges

Additional Information

  • Year-round resident
  • Very common in southern two-thirds
         of Wisconsin
  • Expanding its range northward in Wisconsin
  • Often the first bird of the season to begin
         singing--on a sunny day in January
         or early February
