Long-eared Owl - (Asio otus) 

Identification

  • Medium sized owl
  • Tall ear tuffs, close together
  • Dark vertical stripes through eyes
  • Orangish face coloring
  • Dark, long underbody streaks
  • 13-16" (33-40 cm.)

Habitat

  • Dense woods, near open areas

Additional Information

  • More common in WI during winter months
  • Rare occurrence in the Reserve
  • Roosts in trees during days, hunts open areas at night
  • Colors similar to great horned owl, but not as large
  • Strictly nocturnal
