Identification

  • Small songbird
  • Male deep blue all over, turning more
         brown in fall
  • Female overall dull brown color
  • Bluish color on tail
  • 5.5" (14 cm.)

Habitat

  • Open areas, forest edges

Additional Information

  • Common migrant and summer resident
  • Male sings all day, often from high perch
  • Female secretive, stays near the ground
  • Blue color is due to light diffraction of light off its true black feather colors
  • Very common summer breeding
         species of the KVR
