  • Male has brown cap, brown streaked back, orangish-red breast, rump and forehead heavy brown streaks on sides and belly
  • Female lacks red coloring, face rather plain
  • 6" (15 cm.)

  • Native to western US
  • Eastern populations spread from released
         caged birds in New York in the 1940's
