Green-winged Teal - (Anas crecca) 

Identification

  • A small “dabbling” duck
  • Male: overall grey color, reddish 
         brown head with green patch
         extending from eye, vertical
         white stripe at shoulder
  • In flight, green patches visible on
        
    inner wings (“speculum”)
  • Female: Brown, with small green patch
        
    on secondary feathers (“speculum”)
        
    near tail feathers
  • 14” (35cm) 

Habitat

  • Marsh, river, ponds

Additional Information

  • Uncommon resident in Kickapoo Valley
  • Regular spring and fall KVR migrant
