Identification

  • Small, grey or reddish brown
  • Feather "ear" tufts on top of head
  • 8.5" (22 cm.) 

Habitat

  • Wide variety of habitats with mature
         deciduous trees
  • Woodland, farmsteads, towns

Additional Information

  • Fairly common permanent resident
  • Nests in tree cavities
  • Sometimes uses wood duck boxes
         for nesting or winter roosting
  • Very nocturnal
  • Most common vocalization is a
         descending trill or whinny
