Identification

  • Medium-sized hawk of the woodland
  • Brown above, reddish below
  • Tail has broad dark and light bands
  • 16" (41 cm.)

Habitat

  • Forests, woodlands

Additional Information

  • Abundant migrant, common summer
         resident northern WI, uncommon
         summer resident farther south
  • Has been found on the KVR in breeding
         season
  • Call is a high thin whistle on one note
  • Eats toads (WBBA)
  • Sometimes migrate in large soaring flocks
         known as "kettles"
