Identification

  • Medium-sized songbird
  • Grey-brown above, brick red below
  • White throat with dark stripes
  • White broken eyeline
  • Female is similar but paler
  • Young have speckled underparts
  • 10" (25 cm.)

Habitat

  • Uses a variety of habitats, rural, urban,
         forests, shrubby and residential areas

Additional Information

  • Abundant migrant and summer resident
  • Found occasionally in the winter
  • Wisconsin state bird
  • Early spring migrant
  • May appear in large flocks during spring
         migration
  • Generally a ground feeder
  • Builds nest with mud
