Identification

  • Small songbird
  • Male mostly black with bright orange patches on wings and tail
  • Lower white underside
  • Female mostly olive brown with grey head and large yellow patches on wings and tail
  • 4.5-5.5" (11-14 cm.)

Habitat

  • Deciduous forests

Additional Information

  • Abundant migrant, fairly common resident
  • Redstarts flash tails and wings to startle prey
  • Males may have two mates with two
         distinct territories
  • Abundant KVR breeding bird in
         appropriate habitat
  • Winters in Central America and northern
         parts of South America
