
Below are brief descriptions of campsites in the Reserve. Access listed at each site can be defined as……
No Vehicle Access – Parking is greater than 1000ft from the campsite. Site access is via a trail or by canoe.
Vehicle Access Nearby - Parking is less than 500 feet from the site, although not possible for a camper or trailer to be on the site.
Full Vehicle Access – Parking is available on the site.
River Access Only – The site does not have a trail leading to it. Access is best via canoe/kayak.
Each site has a posted capacity limit. Most are limited to 10 people, but one can accommodate up to 40 people (Campsite D – Willow Camp). Large groups need to apply for an event permit, 30 days prior to the anticipated camping event. Contact the Reserve office for more information.
Campsite A – Lower Star Valley
This is an open site with some small trees along the perimeter. It is the closest campsite to the Visitor Center. A short walk (0.3 miles) from the south gate on Old 131 makes carrying gear easy, especially if you bring a small cart or wagon. The lack of trees provides good opportunity for star watching. Nearby ponds and wetlands provide habitat for various reptiles, birds, mammals and insects. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. No Vehicle Access.
Campsite B – 4H Park
This site is located under a stand of maple trees, adjacent to agriculture fields. The closest parking is at Willow Camp (0.6 miles); proceed down Star Valley trail, and head south on the hiker’s only trail. The abundant tree canopy provides plenty of shade. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. No Vehicle Access.
Campsite C - Upper Star Valley
This site is along Old 131 and offers little to no shade. The closest access is from Willow Camp (0.8 Miles). Park at Willow Camp and walk down Star Valley trail to Old 131, and then head north. The site is on left. The lack of trees provides good opportunity for star watching. Near by ponds and wetlands provide habitat for various reptiles, birds, mammals and insects. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. No Vehicle Access.
Campsite D – Willow Camp
This is the largest camp site in the KVR, and is the ONLY campsite operating as a “multiple group” site. The large field setting makes this site popular among horse back riders due to ease with moving horse trailers. Some hitching posts are present. Although mostly open, tall trees line the perimeter providing either morning or afternoon shade, depending on your set up location. Site capacity is 40 people. Vehicle Accessible.
Campsite E – Schroeder’s
The site is located under a stand of silver maples offering plenty of shade. A flowing/artesian well is nearby (use water filter) along Old 131. Horse trail passes along the side of campsite. Closest parking access is from Willow Camp. Follow the horse trail towards Old 131 (0.5 miles). This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. No Vehicle Access.
Campsite F – Hanson Hollow
This is the KVR’s most remote site. The site is mostly shaded. The closest parking to the site is from the Maintenance building off Corps Road. Follow the mountain bike trail (2 miles) until you reach a horse trail on left . Turn on horse trail and walk 300 ft to campsite. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. No Vehicle Access.
Campsite G - Olsen
This site is located just on Old 131 along the Kickapoo River, a short distance from Old Hwy 131. The site is very much shaded. Some small ponds and wetlands are nearby. The steep river bank makes canoe access difficult; try access slightly upstream from site at bend in river. The closest canoe access point upstream is Landing 14 (~2 miles) and downstream access is Landing 20 (~5.5 miles). The campsite is positioned along side a horse trail, and the site is a small area. The shortest trail access distance (0.8 miles) is from Willow Camp parking area; follow horse trail past Campsite E, turn south on Old 131, turn west on horse trail. A flowing/artesian well is nearby (use water filter) along Old 131. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. No Vehicle Access.
Campsite H - Lawrence
This site is located on Old 131 along the Kickapoo River, and short distance from Old Hwy 131, at Bridge 16. The site is very much shaded, with some small creek nearby. The steep river bank makes canoe access difficult; try exiting river at the confluence of the small stream and the Kickapoo River. The closest canoe landing upstream is Landing 14 (~1.5 miles) and downstream is Landing 20 (~6.0 miles). Trail access to the site is either from the gate at Old 131 and P or from Willow Camp Parking area (each ~ 1 mile). This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. No Vehicle Access.
Campsite I - Walling
The site is located on Old 131 along the Kickapoo River. A short walk across a field provides access from Old 131. Canoe access is very difficult at site (rocky slope, strong current), but slightly downstream is sandy beach for easier access. This is an open site with little to no shade. A wooded area is adjacent to the site. The site is a short walk from gate at Old 131 and County P (0.3 miles). The nearest canoe landing is Landing 14 (~0.5 miles) upstream and Landing 20 (~7 miles) downstream. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. No Vehicle Access.
Campsite J - Mule Camp
This is an open site located on a slight hill. Trees along the north side of the site provide some shade. Although not visible, the site is not far from State Highway 131. The site is popular among horse back riders due to the ease of horse trailers and hitching post. To reach the site from State Highway 131, turn west on a gravel road, 0.2 miles south of the County P (West) and State Highway 131 intersection. The site is located at the end of the gravel road. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 20 people. Vehicle Accessible
Campsite K – South Jug Creek
This site is located off of South Jug Creek Road. There is no immediate trail access at site. The site is mostly open. To accesses the site, turn east on Jug Creek road from State Highway 131, and then south on South Jug Creek RD. After crossing bridge over Jug creek, turn right on gravel access. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. Vehicle Accessible
Campsite L – Bridge 13
The site is located along Old 131, 0.5 miles north from the Old 131 gate at County P (west). Although not far from Bridge 13 and the Kickapoo River (<1000 ft), the site is not an ideal river access site. The site is mostly open. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. No Vehicle Access.
Campsite M - Risen
The site is mostly shaded. The site is located along the Kickapoo River and a short distance from Old 131. The river bank is accommodating for canoe access. The closest upstream access is Landing 12 (0.6 miles) and the downstream access is Landing 14 (1.7 miles). The site is a popular canoe camping site. The closest parking for the sites is at the north gate of Old 131 (0.5 miles). This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. No Vehicle Access.
Campsite N –Daines Valley
This is a vehicle accessible site located in Daines Valley. This narrow valley offers plenty of shade. A flowing well is at the site, along with a small stream. The site is located off County P (west) along a dead end gravel road (Rogers Rd), 0.4 miles west of Bridge 14. Trail access is nearby. Parking is limited along the gravel road. Therefore campers and trailers are not recommended. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. Vehicle Accessible
Campsite O – Ma & Pa’s Park
This site is located along County P-West. There is a flowing well on site (use a water filter), hitching posts, and is the only site with permanent picnic table. The horse trail passes through site. The site can accommodate larger Horse trailers with careful and skilled navigation. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. Vehicle Accessible.
Campsite P – Potts Corner
This site is along Weister Creek Rd, short distance south from County P. This is a relatively small site, mostly shaded, with a flowing well on site (use a water filter). Parking can accommodate a small trailer or camper. Trail access to the mountain bike/equestrian trail is adjacent to the site. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. Campsite Q - Cut Off Road
This is a partially shaded site, a short distance from Cut Off Road. The site has plenty of room for a horse trailer or camper. Horse trail access is not far from the site. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. Vehicle Accessible.
Campsite R – Bare Beach
The camp site is located at the east side of Canoe Landing 10. The designated camp area is just beyond the wooden post. The site is partially shaded and is along the Kickapoo River. Canoe access is very good, but the popularity and vehicle access makes this site not ideal for the canoe-camping adventure, unless gear is set up prior to start of the canoe trip. The adjacent canoe landing has a port potty on site (during Summer only). Camping is not permitted outside the designated camp area or in the gravel parking areas of the canoe landing. Campsite S – Bridge 10
This site is located on the Kickapoo River. The closest upstream access is Landing 7 (2.7 miles) and downstream access is Landing 10 (0.3 miles). The site is mostly shaded and is relatively small area. Parking for the site is located near the intersection of County P- East and State Highway 131, just north of bridge 10. Vehicles may park on the gravel access, on the west side of State Highway 131 (do not block trail access). The camp area is approximately 500 ft from parking. Campsite T – Bridge 7
The site is along the Kickapoo River and just off State Highway 131. Not ideal for canoe access due to step bank and swift current at the site. This site is very popular due to proximity to river and vehicle access. The site offers some shaded. The site is located less than 100 feet north of Bridge 7, on the west side of State Highway 131. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. Vehicle Accessible
Campsite U – Hay Valley
The camp area is at the end of a short drive just off Hay Valley Rd (less than 100 ft). Trail access passes through this small camp area; do not block trail access. A flowing well is on site (use a water filter). To reach the site, turn west on Hay Valley Road for State Highway 131. The site is on left, just past Bridge 6. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. Full Vehicle Access
Campsite V - Monahan
This site is only accessible by the river. There is no trail access to this site. The site is on the left side of the river. Trees offer some shade. The nearest canoe access site upstream is Landing 7 (1.7 miles) and downstream is Landing 10 (1.3 miles). This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. River Access Only.
Campsite W - Frye
This site is shaded and is located along the Kickapoo River (right bank). The bank at the site is relatively steep, but not impossible. Rock outcrops are on the opposite side of the river. The nearest canoe access site upstream is Landing 7 (2 miles) and downstream is Landing 10 (1 mile). There is no trail access to this site. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. River Access Only.
Campsite X – Rockton Slough
This site is mostly shaded and is located along the Kickapoo River (left bank), about half way between landing 10 and the Rockton Bridge (Bridge 11). Look for the campsite on the left, where the river makes a "hard" left turn at a rock face. The nearest canoe access site upstream is Landing 10 (0.6 miles) and downstream is Landing 12 (0.6 mile). There is no trail access to this site. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. River Access Only. Note: The site location was moved on July 18, 2011 from its previous location. Campsite Y - Nottestad
This site is shaded and is located along the Kickapoo River (left bank), just upstream from Landing 12. The site is shaded, with a rock wall at the site. The nearest canoe access site upstream is Landing 10 (1.1 miles) and downstream is Landing 12 (0.1 mile). There is no trail access to this site. This site is for one group only, not to exceed 10 people. River Access Only.
