Identification

  • tiny songbird
  • olive gray above, lighter below
  • two wingbars, short tail
  • prominent eyering
  • male has red crown patch, which is seldom visible
  • female lacks red crown patch
  • 4.25" (11 cm.)

Habitat

  • spruce-fir boreal forest for nesting
  • variety of forested and shrubby habitats are used during migration

Additional Information

  • common migrant
  • flicks wings
  • gives two-noted "ji-dit" call
  • male sings sweet warbly song on migration
  • sometimes allows close approach by humans
