Identification

  • small songbird
  • male deep blue all over, turning more brown in fall
  • female overall dull brown color
  • bluish color on tail
    5.5" (14 cm.)

Habitat

  • open areas, forest edge

Additional Information

  • common migrant and summer resident
  • male sings all day, often from high perch
  • female secretive, stays near the ground
  • blue color is due to diffraction of light off its true black feather colors
  • very common summer breeding species on the Reserve
