Identification

  • Medium-sized, stocky shorebird
  • Generally brown above, white below
  • Striped head and down back
  • Very long bill, short legs
  • 10.5" (27 cm.)

Habitat

  • Sedge meadows
  • Shallow marsh

Additional Information

  • Common migrant, fairly common
         summer resident
  • Sometimes found in winter along
         open spring streams
  • Flushes with a rapid, zigzag flight
  • Spring courtship ritual of "winnowing", a
         sound made with the tail
         feathers during flight
