  • Very small, brown, round head shape
  • Vertical rufous stripes on white belly
  • 8" (20 cm.)


  • Woodland, open areas for hunting

Additional Information

  • Fairly common migrant, uncommon
  • Very nocturnal
  • Most observations occur in spring
         migration upon hearing its call
  • Call is a monotone "tonk, tonk, tonk...",
         resembling the sound of a truck
         back-up tones
