House Sparrow -

  • Small, stocky songbird
  • Brown above with white wingbar
  • Male has black "sooty" throat, whitish
         cheeks, dark bill, grey crown,
         chestnut nape
  • Female dingy brown with light stripe
         over eye, dull grey unstreaked breast;
         dull white underside
  • 5-6.25" (13-16 cm.)


  • Generally near human habitation
  • Farmsteads and residential areas

Additional Information

  • Abundant resident
  • Native to Eurasia and North Africa
  • Released 1850 in Central Park, NYC and
         has since spread across eastern U.S.
