Identification

  • Medium sized
  • Male has black head, chest and upper parts
  • White underneath, red-orange sides
  • Small white area on wings
  • Female brown where male is black
  • 7.5" (19 cm.)

Habitat

  • Forest edge, brushy areas

Additional Information

  • Fairly common migrant and summer resident
  • Scratches at the ground for food
  • Formerly know as Rufous-sided Towhee
  • Common summer breeding bird of the KVR
