  • Large blackish water bird
  • Long neck, short legs, webbed feet, swims 
  • Medium-sized straight bill, hooked at tip
  • Bare orangish skin on face near beak 


  • Lakes, ponds  

Additional Information

  • Fairly common migrant
  • Often perches with wings spread to dry
  • Nests in colonies, often in dead trees over
         water or on islands
  • Very low populations in the 70's
  • Fish eater
