  • Medium-sized songbird
  • Brown above with crest
  • Black mask around eyes
  • Yellowish below
  • Waxy red "dots" on otherwise
         plain grey-brown wings
  • Grey tail with yellow tip
  • 7.25" (8cm.)


  • Wide variety of habitats, including forests,
         forest edges, yard trees, fields with
         scattered trees
  • Fruit-bearing trees and shrubs are favored

  • Common migrant and summer resident
  • Sometimes found in winter
  • Fruit eater, also eats insects in the summer
  • Found in juniper groves in winter, also
         hawthorns and crabapples
  • Common summer resident on the Reserve
