Bufflehead - (Bucephala albeola) 

Identification

  • Small diving duck
  • Male black above, white below, large
         white patch on sides and back of head
  • Female dark brownish above, grey below
  • Small white ear patch
  • 13.5" (34 cm.)

Habitat

  • Ponds, lakes, rivers

Additional Information

  • Common migrant
  • Nests in tree cavities in the boreal forest; 
  • Winters in southern U.S., usually along the  coast
