Identification

  • Small songbird
  • Male has bright golden yellow body
  • Black eye line
  • Blue-grey wings with white wingbars
  • Female similar with duller coloring
  • 4-5" (11-12 cm.)

Habitat

  • Forest edges, shrubby areas, oldfields and
         clearings with small trees

Additional Information

  • Uncommon migrant and summer resident 
  • Wisconsin species of special concern
  • Song is a two-noted buzz: "zeee-bzzz"
  • Insect eater
  • Nests on or near the ground
  • Found regularly on the Reserve in summer
