American Tree Sparrow -

Identification

  • Small songbird
  • Streaked brown back, light below
  • Small round dark spot on otherwise
         clear breast
  • Grey head with rusty red cap and eye stripe
  • Dark upper bill, light colored lower bill
  • Two white wingbars
  • Relatively long tail
  • 5.5-6.5" (14-16 cm.)

Habitat

  • Brushy areas, old fields
  • Residential areas

Additional Information

  • Abundant migrant, common winter resident
  • Breeding areas in northern Canada and Alaska 
  • Watch for predators using left eye
        (juncos use right) (Cornell)
  • During summer they eat insects, in winter
         they switch to seeds
