Identification
- Small songbird
- Streaked brown back, light below
- Small round dark spot on otherwise
clear breast
- Grey head with rusty red cap and eye stripe
- Dark upper bill, light colored lower bill
- Two white wingbars
- Relatively long tail
- 5.5-6.5" (14-16 cm.)
Habitat
- Brushy areas, old fields
- Residential areas
Additional Information
- Abundant migrant, common winter resident
- Breeding areas in northern Canada and Alaska
- Watch for predators using left eye
(juncos use right) (Cornell)
- During summer they eat insects, in winter
they switch to seeds
