  • Large,well-camouflaged marsh dweller
  • Brown above, black neck stripe,large bill
  • Lighter below with brown streaking
  • Darker outer wing feathers are
         noticeable in flight
  • 28" (71 cm.)

  • Common migrant, uncommon summer
  • Wisconsin species of special concern
  • Heard more often than seen; makes
         pumping sound: unk-a-lunk
  • When hiding, perches with beak pointed up
